Due to commitments I have been unable to keep the Weather Observations updated during much of 2007, but have now got life a little more organized. The weather data reports are now on the site, but for some period the wind speed data was unavailable due to technical problems, which have now been sorted out.
JANUARY 1st. Continuing windy into the New Year. With winds gusting to Force 7 WNW, the wind chill was -0.4c at 05.00hrs. Clouding up at 07.00hrs with showers, clearing by 09.00hrs, but remaining windy. With the clouds lifting off the peaks of Northern Snowdonia during the morning, a light scattering of snow was evident on summit of Foel Fras, but the other peaks appeared clear. Temp high 6.8c @ 11.00hrs, temp low 3.6c @ 19.00hrs. January 2nd. Windy overnight to Force 7, with temperatures rising under cloud cover, but remaining dry. Poor visibility across the valley to the mountains. Temp high 7c @ 14.00hrs, temp low 4.6c @ 00.30hrs. January 3rd Windy overnight again, and remaining cloudy throughout the day. Winds increasing in rain from 14.30hrs, gusting to force 8 at 16.30hrs. Some breaks in cloud cover during evening, giving improved visibility to the night skies. Temp high 9.9c @ 16.00hrs, temp low 5.9c @ 00.30hrs. January 4th Strong winds to force 7, and rain showers at times, feeling cold in the wind. The Christmas Rose (Helleborus) are in flower in the front borders, and the first green shoots of the Snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis L) are evident in the meadow. January 5th The cycle of high winds and heavy showers continues, with poor visibility across the valley to the peaks of Snowdonia. Remaining cloudy throughout period. Temp high 9.7c @ 10.00hrs, temp low 5.3c @ 00.01hrs. January 6th Strong winds overnight to force 6. Cloudy in the morning with showers, then clearing in the afternoon with some blue skies. Clouding up again by late evening with winds to force 7, and further showers. January 7th Heavy showers between midnight and 03.00hrs, with winds to force 7. Further heavy showers during the day, with winds increasing again to force 7 by the evening, as low moves S'Westly from Ireland. Pressure 988.7mb. Temp high 9.7c @ 05.30hrs, temp low 7.9c @ 00.30hrs. 6mm of rain by 18.00hrs. Total rainfall for month 16.2mm . January 8th Some clear skies overnight, and less windy than of late. Clouding up and by 10.00hrs further rain showers, some heavy at times. Winds increasing from 14.00hrs with gusts to force 7 WSW. Pressure 983mb. Remaining fairly mild with a temperature of 12.8c at 16.00hrs. Temp high 12.8c @ 16.00hrs, temp low 4.2 @ 06.30hrs. January 9th Very windy overnight to force 8, with heavy rain from 04.30hrs to 10.30hrs (9mm of rain). Remaining cloudy and windy during period. 10.4c @ 11.30hrs, 7.2c @ 18.00hrs. January 10th Windy overnight to 40mph, with heavy rain (5.6mm). Remaining cloudy throughout the day, with a couple of sunny intervals around mid morning. It became colder during the afternoon with a wind chill of -0.6c. Pressure rising during the day from 993mb to 1010.9mb. Temp high 8.5c @ 13.00hrs, temp low 2.9c @ 19.00hrs January 11th Winds to Force 9 westerly overnight, with heavy rain. The winds could be heard howling around the house, with the rain pounding on the window panes Power Lines have been bought down over much of Mid Wales. The Asda Superstore in Llandudno has had its roof damaged, due to the high winds. A house in Nant Peris had its roof and chimney damaged. The A4080 at Llanfairpwll has been closed on Angelsey due to a large tree falling across the road. The Conwy Valley Railway line has been closed due to flooding at Llanrwst. The Met Office expect the gales with winds reaching 70mph to continue until this afternoon. 9.6mm Rain. Temp high 10.7c @ 05.00hrs, temp low 6.1c @ 00.30hrs. 12th January The high winds continued throughout the day, with heavy cloud laden skies. We continue with a westerly air stream pulling in more stormy Atlantic weather. Temp high 12.5c @ 18.00hrs, temp low 6c @ 04.30hrs. Gale force 8 at 18.00hrs. 13th January Good clear periods overnight, then clouding over at day break, with showers some heavy at times during the afternoon. Temp high 9.9c @ 03.30hrs, temp low 4.2c @ 00.10hrs. Winds gusting to force 8 at 13.30hrs. 14th January Clear night again with good visibility into the night skies, Remaining clear all day with good sunny periods. It made a nice change to have a brief interlude with some sunshine.Temp high 8c @ 23.30hrs, temp low 3.6c @ 07.00hrs. 15th January Another cloudy day, with rain showers during the day and winds gusting to force 7. Cloud cover all day, with poor visibility across to the mountains of Northern Snowdonia. Temp high 8.5c @ 20.00hrs, temp low 6.2c @ 07.30hrs TOTAL RAINFALL SO FAR THIS MONTH 52.8mm. January 16th Rain overnight heavy at times. Remaining cloudy throughout the day, with some further light showers. Temp high 7.7c @ 20.30hrs, temp low 3.7c @ 10.00hrs. January 17th Mainly cloudy with some light showers, temperatures dropping during the afternoon, with the winds moving round to the NW, wind chill -1.3c @ 13.30hrs. Temp high 8.4c @ 01.30hrs, temp low 3.9c @ 00.00hrs. January 18th Strong winds and heavy rain during the night with 12.8mm of rain overnight, and winds to 60mph. Severe gales throughout the day with gusts to Force 10+. Our phone line went out at 11.00hrs, and power failures were experienced throughout the day. Pressure dropped to 971.6mb. Major disruption has been experienced throughout Wales and the UK. At 19.00hrs 30,000 homes are without power in Mid and North Wales. Trees and branches litter the roads, and in the local towns displaced roof tiles litter the roads and pavements. One of the worst storms we have experienced in North Wales in recent years. Temp high 12.8c @ 06.30hrs, temp low 6.4c @ 08.00hrs. 19th January Brighter morning, with lighter winds later during the day, and pressure rising in the morning before falling again as another Atlantic low moved in. Cloud started to build again late afternoon, with winds increasing to Force 6. Winds to Force 7 at 03.00hrs. Temp high 10.6c @ 19.30hrs, temp low 6.4c @ 08.00hrs. Many homes are still without power, and the storm is now causing havoc across Europe. 20th January Winds reduced in the early hours, before increasing to Force 8 by early morning. The clouds cleared by mid morning with a little sunshine. Our phone lines are still down, and many people are still without power. Temp high 10.4c @ 00.30hrs, temp low 2.4c @ 23.30hrs. 21st January Some signs of a light fall of ice and snow over the mountains of Northern Snowdonia, down to about 2200ft. Feeling colder than recent days with a couple of ice pellet showers during the late afternoon, and further wintry showers during the evening. Temp high 5.1c @ 13.00hrs, temp low 0.9c @ 23.30hrs. 22nd January Remaining cold overnight with further wintry showers. There were signs of further snowfall on the mountains down to 1500ft. Pressure rising throughout period. Winds gusting to 24 mph easterly, with some good sunny periods during the day. Winds reducing later during the day, with good clear periods after dark. Temp high 4.6c @ 13.00hrs, temp low 1c @ 00.00hrs. 23rd January Light easterly winds, and some ice forming on the windscreen of the vehicle parked on the drive overnight. Good visibility across to the Mountains with snow still visible. Pressure rising to 1027mb. Cloud building later in the day, with some light wintry showers, before temperatures began to rise. Temp high 3.5c @ 23.30hrs, temp low 0.1c @ 10.30hrs. 24th January Temperatures falling again overnight. Cloud increasing during the morning Pressure rising to 1018mb with winds turning NE'ly. Skies clearing by evenings with good views into the night sky. Light easterly winds. Temp high 3.8c @ 01.00hrs, temp low 1.4c @ 07.00hrs. 25th January Frost forming in the early hours, with pressure continuing to rise to 1029mb. Sunny morning with a light easterly wind, remaining sunny throughout the day. Visibility good across to the Mountains with snowfall visible on the peaks. Temp high 4.8c @ 13.30hrs, temp low 1.3c @ 08.00hrs. 26th January Becoming cloudy with rain showers during the early hours, and winds turning westerly. Further rain during the afternoon and evening. Temp high 6.1c @ 20.30hrs, temp low 2.5c @ 00.30hrs. 27th January Brighter start to the day, with pressure rising to 1032mb. Becoming cloudy during the afternoon, with intermittent light rain later in the day. Temp high 6.1c @ 00.30hrs, temp low 3.9c @ 23.00hrs. 28th January Remaining cloudy with low cloud clinging to the mountains. A rather gloomy day with winds picking up during the evening. Temp high 7.4c @ 12.00hrs, temp low 4.1c @ 00.30hrs. 29th January Another cloudy gloomy day with pressure steady 1031mb.Temp high 6.6c @ 00.30hrs, temp low 5.1c @ 19.30hrs. 30th January Pressure remaining high, with the gloom continuing, clearing a little during the afternoon, to give some clear spells after dark. Temp high 6.9c @ 14.00hrs, temp low 3.8c @ 23.00hrs. 31st January Remaining mild overnight, under cloud cover. Mainly cloudy during the day with a couple of clear intervals. Windy at times but winds reducing by nightfall. Temp high 10.2c @ 12.00hrs, temp low 5.1c @ 03.00hrs.
1st February. Mainly cloudy day, but the cloud lifted off the mountain tops during the early afternoon. Fog began to form by early evening becoming thick by 23.00hrs. Temp high 9.9c @ 14.30hrs, temp low 6.1c @ 08.00hrs. 2nd February. The fog and cloud lifted and by 07.00hrs the skies were clear, with temperatures dropping. Good periods of sunshine during the day, with the sky remaining clear after dark, with good visibility into the night sky, and temperatures continuing to fall. Temp high 8.9c @ 13.00hrs, temp low 2.3c @ 21.00hrs. 3rd February. Pressure continued to rise overnight to 1039mb. A lovely sunny day with very little cloud. Remaining clear after dark, with a beautiful moonlit night. Temp high 11.1c @ 15.00hrs, Temp low 2.5c @ 01.00hrs 4th February. Heavy frost on the ground, and clear skies with a beautiful sunrise. Good visibility across to the mountains of Northern Snowdonia. Clear skies during the morning, with some cloud after lunch, but clearing again by dusk, with frost forming by 21.00hrs. Temp high 12c @ 13.00hrs, temp low 0.9c @ 20.30hrs 5th February. Another lovely sunrise with frost evident on the grass in the meadow. A light snowfall was evident on the mountain peaks. Good clear periods during the day, feeling warm in the sun. Skies remaining clear after dark with frost quickly forming again. Temp high 6.3c @ 12.30hrs, temp low 0.6c @ 23.30hrs.
9th February Skies clearing overnight with winds remaining in an easterly direction, giving a raw feel to the air. Further snow fell during the day mainly light but fairly constant from 09.00hrs to 16.30hrs, giving accumalations of 3" around the weather station. The precipation fell as rain in the coastal towns, with snow only on the high ground. Further snow fell around mid and north east Wales, leading to further disruption to transport. At Sennybridge 4" of snow has been recorded. Further fog forming by dusk, with temperatures falling again. Temp high 0.4c @ 11.00hrs, temp low -2.5c @ 03.30hrs. Windchill -4c @ 20.00hrs. 10th February Remaing cold in the morning, temperatures rising slowly during the afternoon with the snow begining to thaw. Remaining cloudy with mist patches from time to time, with winds turning westerly. Temp high 3.5c @ 23.59hrs, temp low 0.2c @ 00.30hrs. 11th February Heavy rain showers overnight saw the snow disappear by dawn. Skies clearing by mid morning with some good sunny periods, but clouding up by late afternoon. Pressure 983mb. Temp high 9.2c @ 13.00hrs, temp low 3.5c @ 00.30hrs. 12th February Rain showers overnight with pressure dropping to 977.1mb, remaining cloudy throughout the day with intermittent rain showers during the morning and early afternoon. Remaining wet under foot. Winds gusting to force 6 by late evening westerly. Temp high 7.5c @ 11.30hrs, temp low 4.8c @ 08.00hrs. 13th February A dull day with the clouds covering the summit peaks. Pressure rising slowly to 995.6mb @ 18.00hrs. Rain showers during the early part of the evening, then clearing to give a few glimpses of the stars. Temp high 7c @ 23.30hrs, temp low 4.5c @ 20.00hrs. 14th February Dry overnight with clear periods, and temperatures dropping to 3.3c @ 08.00hrs. Good clear sunny periods throughout the day, with a little mist building towards the mountains at dusk. Winds increasing to Force 5 by mid evening, Temp high 9.2c @ 14.30hrs, temp low 3.3c @ 08.00hrs.
1st March St Davids Day (Dewi Sant) Cold start to the day with a windchill -1.5c at 05.30hrs, with a force 5 WNW wind. Clear periods with good sunny intervals during the day, and evidence of snow showers on the mountains. Clouding up after dusk with some light rain showers during the evening. Temp high 6.6c @ 16.00hrs, temp low 2.2c @ 00.00hrs. 2nd March Cold overnight with a ground frost. Lovely sunny day with good visibility across to the mountains in the morning, but deteriorating during the afternoon. Clouding up by evening with periods of rain from 21.00hrs. Temp high 8.5c @ 15.00hrs, temp low 1.9c @ 00.30hrs. 3rd March Skies clearing after midnight with a light ground frost by first light. Clear skies with good sunny intervals during the day. Remaining clear after dark with a bright night sky illuminated by the nearly full moon. Pressure rising to 1006.8mb at 20.00hrs. Temp high 9c @ 15.00hrs, temp low 4.2c @ 06.30hrs. 4th March Windy by dawn, with heavy cloud and heavy rain by 09.00hrs, with winds gusting to force 8. Remaining wet and windy for most of the day, and into the evening. Rainfall 9mm, Temp high 9.7c @ 15.30hrs, temp low 2.8c @ 04.00hrs. Pressure 988.7mb at 14.30hrs.
1st December. Windy
overnight. Evidence of light snowfall on the summit of Foel Fras by
morning. Clearing skies by daybreak with sunny periods during the
morning. Clouding up after mid day, with winds increasing by evening,
gusting to 35mph WSW @ 21.00hrs. 2.2mm of rain during the 24hr period.
Temp high 8.5c @ 13.30hrs, Temp low 3.5c @ 00.30hrs, but feeling much
colder in the wind. 2nd
December. Continuing
very windy with a slight lull around 06.30hrs, pressure dropping to 978.1mb
@ 13.04hrs. 6mm of rain recorded between 04.30hrs and 08.30hrs. Winds
gusting to 40 mph @ 11.00hrs, and remaining around gale force for most
of the period. Temp high 9.8c @ 09.30hrs, Temp low 4.7c @ 06.30hrs. 11.6mm
of rain. 3rd December. Remaining windy overnight with
gusts to 25mph WNW, with a wind chill of 0c @ 06.30hrs with Pressure
of 996.7mb. Rain showers from 06.30hrs continuing through the morning.
Winds increasing to 35mph during the afternoon, feeling cold in the westerly
wind. A couple of heavy blustery showers after dusk. Temp high 6.8c @
12.00hrs, Temp low 3.8c @ 07.00hrs. 4th December. The
winds remain a feature of the weather, but remaining dry till 16.30hrs
then some showers till 18.30hrs. Gales from mid afternoon with gusts
to force 8 at 17.30hrs. (Walking along the top road at this time, which
is very exposed across to the mountains of Northern Snowdonia, I estimate
the wind speed to be above this, as I had difficulty making headway at
times. Very enjoyable feeling the forces of nature). Skies clearing by
early evening with good visibility into the night sky. No let up in the
present weather expected, with a further deep area of low pressure expected
to sweep across Wales on Thursday. Temp high 11.9c @ 12.30hrs, Temp low
5.8c @ 00.30hrs. 5th
December Another day of wind and rain, with winds gusting to
force 8 WSW @ 18.00hrs. Temp high 11.6c @ 02.00hrs, Temp low @ 7.5c
@ 22.30hrs. Pressure rising throughout period to 1003mb @ 01.00hrs. 6th
December Remaining windy overnight, with rain between 07.30hrs
and 08.30hrs.
